Oh man, am I enjoying the Casual Friday Slouch hat! The pattern was a breeze and it’s been field tested in some nasty Pennsylvania winter weather. I couldn’t be happier with it!

I made two of these — one in I Love This Yarn! in Antique White and another in a super pretty blue/grey yarn called Red Heart Unforgettable Waves in Riverbank. I absolutely love them both and use them interchangeably. (My coat is black, so pretty much anything goes with it.)
The only thing I wish I would’ve done with this pattern is maybe trying one of those super lux faux fur poms! I’ve been searching the stores around me for faux fur to make my own, but there is absolutely zero in this “backwoods” area that I live in.

I still need to check JoAnn fabrics. Maybe I will have some luck there. Do you buy your faux fur poms or make them yourself? Any recommendations on a good designer of poms? Let me know in the comments below! Thanks!
So this pattern uses only single crochets and double crochets. It creates a beautiful striping effect, without looking like a circus tent! Ha! Essentially, it is a rectangle that you fold in half, stitch a side seam and then cinch at the top. Easy peasy and very beginner friendly!
Let’s get started, shall we?

UPDATE!!! If you prefer a more “beanie” type of hat with less slouch, try a foundation chain of 34 and follow the same instructions below. Your hat will look like this…

Casual Friday Slouch
Materials Used:
- 4 oz. of I Love This Yarn in Antique White – 7 oz/199 g – 355 yds/325 m
- 4 oz. of Red Heart Unforgettable Waves in Riverbank – 3.5 oz/100 g – 119 yds/109 m
- Or any size 4 medium weight yarn
- H/8 (5.00 mm) crochet hook — my most favorite hooks! I use them daily!
- I/9 (5.25 mm) crochet hook
- Four or more stitch markers
- Tapestry needle
Finished Size Approximately:
24” circumference (opening) x 12” length (unfolded)
Gauge:
14 double crochet stitches and 7 rows in a 4” (10cm) square.
Abbreviations:
FC – foundation chain
ch(s) – chain(s)
st(s) – stitch(es)
sc – single crochet
dc – double crochet
sl st – slip stitch
Notes:
- This hat is made as a flat panel and then seamed down the side and the end is then cinched closed using yarn and a tapestry needle.
- A larger hook size is recommended for the foundation chain in order to keep that edge from being too tight. This suggestion is optional.
- You can adjust the size around the head by adding or removing rows from the main panel. If making a child sized hat and you need it to be shorter, you will need a multiple of 6 chains plus 4.
*** American crochet terms used throughout.
Instructions:
Using I/9 (5.25 mm) crochet hook
FC: Ch 40
Switch to H/8 (5.00 mm) crochet hook for the remainder of the project
Row 1: In the 2nd ch from hook, (sc, ch 1, dc) all in same ch. *Skip next ch, (sc, ch 1, dc) all in next ch* Repeat from * to * across until 2 chs remain. Skip next ch, sc in last ch. Turn.
Row 2: Ch 3 (counts as dc), *In next ch-1 space, dc. In next sc from previous row, dc* Repeat from * to * across. Turn. (39 dc)
Row 3: Ch 1, (sc, ch 1, dc) in same st ch 1 comes out of, *skip next dc, (sc, ch 1, dc) all in next st* Repeat from * to * across until 2 sts remain. Skip next st, sc in 3rd ch of turning ch from previous row. Turn.
Continue to alternate Rows 2 and 3 for pattern for a total of 40 rows.
Row 41: Ch 1, turn your panel so that you are working along the shorter side, sc evenly to next corner.
Cut about a 20” tail for seaming. Thread your tail into a tapestry needle.
Fold your panel so that the two shorter ends are touching. Place stitch markers evenly along that edge through both thicknesses to keep it even as you stitch.

Whip stitch the two ends together, removing the stitch markers as you go along. When you get to the end, turn your hat so that you are working around the end that will be cinched together. (The end of the hat that you single crocheted evenly along will be your finished opening.) Run your hook into the stitches along the edge the entire way around the top of the hat. Pull your tail tight to cinch the hat closed. Begin weaving your yarn in a zig zag pattern across any remaining opening, pulling tight to close the hole. Finish off.
Flip your hat right side out and fold the open side upward as shown in the main photo.
